Parent-proven tips to get kids reading

(Some ideas taken from greatschools.org and imaginationsoup.net.)
  • Take turns reading aloud with your child.

  • Find silly books that make your child laugh.

  • Offer an incentive program.

  • Create your own "library days."

  • Read on the go, in the car, while you're waiting at the doctor's office, etc.

  • Encourage your kids to read other things besides just books.

  • If you hear about a new movie coming out based on a book, tell your child that once he/she reads the book you go on a movie date to see the movie!  Make sure you read the book also.

  • Make an enticing place for your child to read books, maybe a cozy reading corner somewhere in your house.

  • Find a book series your child loves!

  • Set a good example; read yourself.

  • It's never too late to start reading with your child!
